Accessibility statement
The Lyric Theatre wants every child, teacher and family to be able to enjoy Waste Busters, whatever their needs and whatever device they are using. This statement explains how accessible the website is, where it falls short, and how to tell us about a problem.
Using this website
We have designed and built Waste Busters so that you can:
- use it on a computer, a tablet, a classroom whiteboard or a phone;
- move around every page with a keyboard, with a clear outline showing where you are;
- zoom in to make everything bigger;
- tap the places on the map on a touch screen - their names are always showing, so there is nothing hidden behind a mouse hover;
- read the words in the pictures with a screen reader - the speech bubbles, the map and the scenes all have text descriptions;
- turn the animations down - if your device is set to reduce motion, the website does too.
We have also checked that the text on the website is dark enough against its background to be read easily.
How accessible this website is
We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA, the standard most UK organisations work to. We believe most of the website does. There are some parts we know are not fully accessible:
- The games and the quiz were made by a specialist games developer using a tool called Unity. They are drawn as pictures inside the page, so a screen reader cannot read them, and they may not work fully with a keyboard alone.
- The resource pack and the lesson plans are PDF files. They have been prepared for screen readers, but we have not been able to test every page. The resource pack is also a large download, of around 20 MB.
- The hand-drawn lettering in the artwork, such as the writing on the classroom blackboard, is part of the pictures. Where it matters, the same words are also on the page as text or in the picture's description.
If something does not work for you
If you find a problem using Waste Busters, or you need any of the content in a different format - such as the resource pack in large print or as a Word document - please let us know. Contact the Lyric Theatre, 55 Ridgeway Street, Belfast, BT9 5FB, or get in touch through the Lyric Theatre contact page, and tell us which page you were on and what went wrong. We will do our best to help and to fix it.
How we checked the website
The website was reviewed by its designers, Element Seven, in September 2026 before it went live. We checked it on computers, tablets and phones, used it with a keyboard, and measured the contrast of the text and colours. We will keep improving it and will update this statement when we do.
