The short version

  • You do not need to tell us anything about yourself to use Waste Busters. There are no forms, no accounts and no sign-ups.
  • If you say yes, we use Google Analytics to count visits. It does not tell us who you are, and you can change your mind at any time.
  • Like every website, ours keeps short technical records of visits to keep it safe and working.
  • We never sell information, and we never use it to show you adverts.

Who we are

Waste Busters is a project from the Creative Learning department at the Lyric Theatre, Belfast, funded by the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA). The Lyric Theatre, 55 Ridgeway Street, Belfast, BT9 5FB, is responsible for any personal information this website handles - in data protection law, the Lyric Theatre is the "data controller".

The website was built, and is looked after, by Element Seven, a web design studio in Belfast, working on the Lyric Theatre's behalf.

What information we collect, and why

Nothing you type in

Waste Busters is made for children aged 8 to 11. It has no forms, accounts, log-ins or sign-ups, so you never need to give us your name, email address or anything else about yourself. The games and the quiz run in your browser and do not send your answers or scores to us or to anyone else.

Technical records of visits

When any device visits a website, it has to send some technical information, such as its IP address, the type of browser it is using and the page it asked for. Our web server and our security service, Cloudflare, keep short records of this. We use them only to keep the website secure, to stop attacks and to fix problems. They are deleted automatically after a short time and are not used to find out who anyone is.

Counting visits with Google Analytics - only if you say yes

With your permission, we use Google Analytics to see how many people visit Waste Busters, which pages they look at, how long they stay, what kind of device they use and roughly which country or town they are in. This helps us understand what children and teachers find useful. It does not tell us anyone's name, it does not keep your IP address, and we have switched off Google's advertising features. Detailed information is deleted after 2 months; after that we only keep overall totals.

If you say no, nothing about your visit is sent to Google Analytics. You can change your answer at any time on our cookie policy page.

The lettering on the website

The fonts on this website come from Google Fonts. To show them, your browser connects to Google, which means Google receives your device's IP address. Google says it does not use this to identify you or to build a profile of you.

The legal reasons we can use this information

Data protection law says we must have a good reason to use personal information. We rely on:

Who else handles this information

We only share information with companies that help us run the website, and only for that purpose:

Google and Cloudflare may handle information outside the UK, including in the USA. When they do, it is protected by safeguards approved under UK data protection law. We never sell information, and we never share it for advertising.

Children

Waste Busters has been designed so that children can use all of it without giving us any information about themselves. Google Analytics is off unless someone says yes, and it is set up without advertising features. Parents and teachers who would rather a child's visits were not counted can choose "Essential only" on that device.

Your rights

You have the right to ask us for a copy of any personal information we hold about you, to ask us to correct or delete it, and to object to how we use it. Where we rely on your consent, you can withdraw it at any time. Because this website does not ask who you are, we will usually hold nothing that we can connect to you, but we will always look and tell you.

If you are unhappy with how we have handled your information, please contact us first so we can put it right. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office, the UK's data protection regulator, at ico.org.uk or on 0303 123 1113.

Cookies

Our cookie policy lists everything this website saves on your device and explains how to control it.

Links to other websites

Waste Busters links to other websites, such as Eco-Schools Northern Ireland. They are run separately and have their own privacy policies, which we are not responsible for.

Changes to this policy

We will update this page if anything changes, and the date at the top will always show when it was last updated. The Lyric Theatre's wider privacy policy covers everything else the theatre does, such as booking tickets.
